Saving Brains Grenada

The goal of the Saving Brains Grenada program is to spread a ‘Conscious Discipline meme’ throughout the nation of Grenada, whereby parents, teachers, and other caregivers adopt the underlying philosophy, skills and powers of Conscious Discipline in order to raise securely attached children, in safe environments, to maximize brain development and build a smart, healthy, next generation.

A pilot program ran from 2014-2016, in which 70+ Roving Caregivers, who had been providing infant stimulation to at-risk infants and toddlers since 2002, added training in Conscious Discipline to their weekly home visits. In addition to the home visits parents were also offered training at the Saving Brains bus, a mobile classroom, Safe Place, and community gathering site for families with young children that traveled around the country.

As a result of positive outcomes and feedback Saving Brains Grenada has continued to grow with parenting and community classes and has now expanded to coaching teachers in Grenadian pre-primary and primary schools.

Home-based intervention

The Roving Caregiver Programme is a home-based intervention programme that focuses on parents with children (ages zero to three.) who do not have access to formal early childhood development services. Families are visited weekly in their homes and an emphasis is placed on building safety and connection through play and fun activities.

Community-based intervention

These classes, lead by the Roving caregivers, take place in local communities either at the Saving Brains Grenada bus or at a local gathering place such as a church hall or community centre. These gatherings provide collective opportunities to build community, share experiences and allow parents the experience of practicing safe and healthy attachments with their children and their neighbours.

School-based intervention

Saving Brains Grenada coaches work closely with a selected teacher in the classroom. The coach’s role is to model Conscious Discipline and to support and assist the teacher with all aspects of its implementation.
